New Greater Harrismith

The New Greater Harrismith Association is a voluntary association established to speak on behalf of the residents of Wards 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 22 of the current Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality. These wards cover Harrismith, Intabazwe, Tshiame, Kestell, Thlolong, Makholokweng, Sterkfontein Dam and Nature Reserve, Platberg Nature Reserve, Swinburne and the farming areas surrounding these places. The first objective is to bring a Review Application in the Gauteng High Court to overturn the decision of the Municipal Demarcation Board on 30 July 2025, to NOT de-merge the Maluti-a-Phofung municipality, to create two separate municipalities. The original proposals were submitted in March 2022 and named as proposal DEM6781.

Who can join?

Any permanent resident (individual) of one of the wards mentioned above can join the Association.

How to join?

You can join at the HIT Residents Association Offices, 4 Herano Court, 52 Stuart Street, Harrismith or at Kanja Cafe, Kestell.

You will need to bring:

A copy of your I.D. (front and back in case of I.D. Cards)
R20 cash
Proof of address

Application forms which are available at both venues must be completed and signed and submitted with the documents mentioned above and the R20 member fee for which you will receive a receipt.

Residents say that they are not getting clear answers from the Demarcation Board. Free State MEC for Cogta, Saki Mokoena reportedly made an announcement during a meeting with the board and SALGA in July this year saying that three municipalities would be set up in the province which will include Harrismith.
